Muckleshoot member and Executive Director of Culture and Heritage Walter Pacheco (1951-2022) tells the story of the annual Canoe Journey that brings together coast Salish Tribes including the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe. Beginning in 1989 as the Paddle to Seattle and continuing today as Canoe Journey 2023, Paddle to Muckleshoot, Canoe Journey is a celebration of heritage and culture that connects us to our ancestors and sustains us as a Tribe and a people. Pacheco says,
"Being together out on the water, that was where we spent our time, that was where we found our songs, that was where we felt our spiritual strengths."
